Recording/live streaming rig in a flight case

Build a TV studio in a flight case - Here's all the gear you'll need.

By John Barker • 24 Nov 2016

Update: We’ve created a 2018 version of this setup, check it out here!

We’ve been doing plenty of traveling with our gear for a long while now, so keeping everything portable is really important to us. Building a streaming and recording rig into a small box was priority number 1, and having field tested it a bunch of times, we thought it could do with an upgrade!

So here’s a little walkthrough of our setup, and you can watch as we upgrade it to a newer (and hopefully better) version.

We also wanted to list all of the gear inside as best we can, so here goes… In this video, we really wanted to upgrade our TV studio that’s packed into a 4U flight case.

The gear

Case

4U 19 inch Shallow Rack Bag by Gear4music - This is a rock solid case and small in size.

Switcher

ATEM 1m/e Production Switcher - You can’t buy these new anymore so we’ve linked to eBay!

Display

Blackmagic Design SmartView Duo - You can see my review of these screens right here.

Router

TP-LINK TL-WR940N 450 Mbps Wireless N Cable Router - This is just the one we liked, i’m sure you’ll find something better.

Patch Panel and Connectors

Thon Rack Panel 1U 12XLR - This is the main metal bracket that holds all of the sockets.

Connectors:

Latte Panda

Awesome little Windows 10 computer - I use this for graphics and video playback.

This has always (and will always) be a work in progress, so hopefully, we will check back in soon with an updated video! If you have any questions, then please reach out via our contact page.
